There are a variety of SGI activities that take place regularly in the Greater Austin area, as well as special events periodically. The area comprising Austin, San Marcos, Wimberley, Lockhart, Bastrop and Buda is organized as Austin Chapter.

The Chapter is divided into nine districts: Northeast District, Northwest District, Round Rock District, Central District, South District, Town Lake District, Longview District, Hill Country District and College Station District (serving Bryan & College Station). For information on a district near you, please call 512-323-9191 or email sgiaustin@sbcglobal.net There are two chapters in Killeen. For information on activities in the Killeen/Fort Hood area, please call 254-699-6430.

The Discussion Meeting
The discussion meeting is the heart of SGI activities and is held by each district once a month. Practitioners of Nichiren's Buddhism gather in homes to chant and share their experiences. It is also an opportunity for guests to find out more about the basics of Buddhist practice and the SGI movement for peace.

Discussion meetings are gatherings of ordinary individuals taking action for the peace and prosperity of our communities. As SGI members, we believe that good community relations are a necessary element in the creation of a peaceful world.

Youth Activities
SGI Austin places great emphasis on the importance of treasuring and nurturing Youth, both within the organization, and within society as a whole. It is our firm belief that young people are not meant merely to follow their elder’s, but rather, to learn to resolutely, stand up, lead, and shape a more peaceful future for humanity. Youth Division is composed of the Young Women’s Division, the Young Men’s Division, the Junior High School Division, and the Boy’s and Girls Group. Each individual group meets according to their particular division, as well as uniting with the other groups, under the banner of Youth Division.

Some of our activities include our own discussion meetings, supporting our individual districts, supporting each other’s practice, and sponsoring the Basics of Buddhism meetings. The Basics of Buddhism meetings are introductory meetings where we provide new members and guests the opportunity to learn the method and benefits of practicing Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism.

Collectively, it is our goal as members of Youth Division, to provide a warm and nurturing environment in which young people are allowed the opportunity to “give full play to his or her unique potential and individuality.”

Other Activities
In addition to district discussion meetings, there are other meetings that occur monthly, bi-monthly or annually. They are designed to enable members to deepen their faith in the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin, improve their practice and thus cultivate a more joyful life. All meetings begin with reciting of a portion of the Lotus sutra (called Gongyo) and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo (called Daimoku).
